What is PCB Stencil?

A PCB stencil—also known as an SMT stencil—is a thin metal sheet used in the surface mount process for the precise deposition of solder paste. Featuring apertures that align with the PCB pads enables the controlled application of solder paste onto the circuit board, serving as a critical tool in SMT production.

What is the difference between prototype (frameless) and production (framed) stencils?

Frameless stencils are low-cost foils ideal for manual printing during the R&D phase. Framed stencils are pre-tensioned within a rigid frame to ensure stability and durability on automated, high-volume SMT assembly lines.

You must provide Gerber files for the solder paste layer (top and/or bottom). These files, typically with extensions like `.gtp` or `.gbp`, define the exact size and location of each aperture.

For fine-pitch components, thinner stencils are required to prevent solder bridging between pads. Stencil thickness must be carefully balanced to ensure sufficient solder paste for strong joints while avoiding defects; this follows the aspect ratio rule.

Regular cleaning prevents dried solder paste from clogging apertures, thereby avoiding insufficient solder deposition (or “open” joints) and poor solder connections. For high-volume production, consistent cleaning is crucial for maintaining high yields and reliability.
